Students excel at Central Texas Science and Engineering Fair

Students from the ATLAS Academy and Tennyson Middle School represented Waco ISD at the 2019 Central Texas Science and Engineering Fair (CTSEF) at TSTC on Tuesday, Feb. 26.

Three teams competed in the 2019 CTSEF Junior Science Bowl.  The team made up of Daniel Garner, Andrew Higgins, Athan Zimmerman and Jude Wendel won the 2019 CTSEF Junior Science Bowl, a first-time honor for Tennyson Middle School.  These students and Anna Grace Hogue will be competing in the Department of Energy (DOE) Regional Junior Science Bowl Saturday, March 2 at Texas A&M University.

Daniel Garner, Andrew Higgins and Sam Everett earned first place in the Engineering Mechanics category with their project, “A.T.O.M.  Automated Transport of Materials.”  Giselle Favella and Victoria Sanchez placed third in the Mathematics category.  These students will move on to compete in the Texas Science and Engineering Fair March 29-30 at Texas A&M University.

Students spent nearly every lunch period from the beginning of the school year, in addition to weekends and some evenings, working on their projects.

Science mentors included Dr. Garner, Mrs. Sykes, Mrs. Cannon, Mrs. Lyles, Mrs. Cleary, Mr. Rambo, Mrs. Hall and the ATLAS-Tennyson Science Team.

The coaches and teams would like to encourage more students to participate in both the Science and Engineering Fair and the DOE Junior/High School Science Bowl.  CTSEF and ESC Region 12 are hosting a session for teachers, parents and students on Thursday, May 9 from 5-7 p.m. at the Baylor Research and Innovation Collaborative (BRIC).
