ALL 2021 STAAR TESTING TO TAKE PLACE ON CAMPUS
After being canceled in the Spring of 2020 due to the pandemic, all state-mandated STAAR testing will take place ON CAMPUS. University High School will test all students online. All tests for UHS students must be administered at University High School.
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) requires school districts to administer the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) to students in grades 3 – 8 and STAAR End-of-Course assessments (EOCs) in middle and high school for students taking high school courses where an EOC is required. For students whose first language is not English, the Texas English Language Proficiency System (TELPAS) is required to measure English learners’ proficiency and growth in English. All English learners in kindergarten through grade 12 take TELPAS each spring.
High school course EOC exams are a requirement for graduation. If students do not take and pass 2021 Algebra I, English I, English II, Biology, or U.S. History exams, they will be required to take those exams at a future administration. The next two testing opportunities will be June or December 2021. If your student is in grades 3-10, STAAR testing is a required component of the TEA criteria for reclassification. If your student does not participate in STAAR testing for Reading or English EOC, your student will not be eligible for reclassification from the ESL program.
Under typical circumstances, these tests provide essential information about student progress and mastery of the grade level and subject area curriculum. The results also help teachers and principals identify students for advanced coursework or who may need additional learning opportunities. In April through May 2021, Waco ISD will administer the TEA required grade level and subject area assessments.
Students attending school on-campus
Similar to years before the pandemic, and with COVID-19 safety measures in place, students attending school on campus will be presented with grade level and subject area assessments.
Students attending school remotely
TEA did not provide a provision to accommodate at-home STAAR testing, therefore students who are attending school remotely will test on their campus. The same COVID-19 safety protocols that have been in place all school year will apply on assessment days. This includes the use of face coverings.
In years past, students were required to remain on campus for the duration of the test. For Spring 2021, students are allowed to leave campus upon completing the assessment, with parent approval however, transportation will not be available for students who leave before the end of the school day. Students eligible for transportation and learning remotely may ride the bus to and from school on the day assessments are administered, or parents can choose to drop-off/pick-up their student(s). Please communicate with your campus about arrangements for your student. School lunch will be available.
More information about test dates scheduled at your students’ campus is available from the school’s main office. Please contact your campus for more specific testing information.
