Waco ISD announces Employees of the Month for March 2021

Waco ISD is proud to announce its Employees of the Month for March 2021! The Employee of the Month program was started in February 2020 and relaunched last fall following a hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020-2021 program has seen an impressive number of submissions with hundreds of staff recognizing and nominating their colleagues for their hard work and dedication.

Although the initial intent was to recognize one employee each in the categories of professional staff and paraprofessional/support staff, the high number of nominations highlighting and celebrating staff across the district continues to warrant the selection of four employees. The nominations praised positive attitudes, teamwork, dedication and the various ways staff members have worked to support their staff and students during a challenging year. Congratulations to the following employees who were selected as Waco ISD Employees of the Month for March 2021!

About the honorees...
Shanda Baker is a Deaf education teacher at University High School, teaching multiple subjects across multiple grade levels for her students. Additionally, she is an advocate, encourager, motivator and role model for her students, while also being a mentor for her colleagues. One of her many nominations noted she is a “24/7 teacher” and “literally the best teacher I have even known,” while another stated she “truly embodies UHS’ word to live by: Love. Serve. Care.”

Mario Guevara, P.E. teacher at Parkdale Elementary School, was described as “the glue of Parkdale” in one of his nominations. He consistently checks on colleagues, brings joy to the school and helps the students become self-confident. He participates in or even leads many campus activities and is not afraid to “go the extra mile” for his students and peers. He gifts supplies and resources for students anonymously and gives positive advice. Coach Guevara works hard to prepare his students for the world, including recognizing their part in it and who and what they can become.

Brandon Lee, help desk technician with the district’s technology services department, is a proven asset to his team. He is always willing to assist his coworkers – all while being patient and extremely courteous, with exceptional technical skills and a professional personality. He was also described as an awesome team player, punctual and a fast learner with great leadership skills. One individual even noted “[You’ve] got a good one with Brandon.”

Marvin Casey, security guard at Wiley Opportunity Center, is usually the first person on campus each day and the first person you meet when you walk in the front door. During the pandemic, he even volunteered to serve as a temperature screener for staff and campus visitors. Even in sometimes highly stressful situations, Mr. Casey always keep his cool and remains respectful. He is “generous with his time, money and kind spirit.” Mr. Casey has worked to assist a family with groceries when he learned of the need and has often been known to work with a student to deescalate a situation or help them through a bad day.
