Week 7 - Lions battle hard but fall 36-17

Lions battle hard but fall 36-17 The Harker Heights Knights spoiled Homecoming Friday for the Lion faithful and kept the Lions winless in District 12-6A play. The Lions are licking their wounds after a game that resulted in their 5th consecutive loss.

After a defensive and scoreless first quarter, the 2nd frame saw quite a bit more action for the scoreboard operator. The Lions cracked the board first with a field goal off the leg of Chris Esqueda. Harker Heights got on the board thanks to a holding penalty in the endzone to make the score 3-2. The game's first touchdown was awarded to the Knights after a long run from scrimmage but Waco reciprocated on a long run by Randy Carpenter to go up by one.

Harker Heightts closed outt the scoring in the half with a TD and the scoreboard read 16-10 in favor of the Knights. The lead was extended in the 3rd on an early Knight TD but the Lions responded yet again to cut the lead to 23-17. Harker Heights put a cap on the 3rd quarter scoring to lead by 13 going into the 4th.

Midway through the final frame, Waco drove the length of the field down to the Knight one yard line but on 4th and goal, the center/quarterback exchange was fumbled and the ball went over on downs to the Knights. The Lions refused to go down without a fight forcing a punt to give the offense a shot down 13. Harker Heights had plans of their own and stopped the Lions yet again on 4th down to seal their first victory of the season and send the Lions home still searching for their first district win.

With the 36-17 loss, Waco falls to (1-5; 0-4) while Harker Heights improves to (1-6; 1-4). The Lions go on the road this Friday looking for that district win column. They will face off against the winless Grey Wolves of Shoemaker at Leo Buckley Stadium in Killeen, October 19 at 7:30. Make your plans now to head down to Killeen and root on your Lions.
