Last month, Dr. Marcus Nelson was one of three superintendents invited to participate in the governor’s roundtable on school safety. This week, Waco ISD hosted two town hall meetings to engage parents, students and community members in a local conversation about how to ensure that schools are a safe and welcoming place for students to learn and grow.

Next Tuesday, Nelson will host a discussion with elected officials, school leaders, first responders and mental health professionals as a follow up to the governor’s roundtable and the local town hall meetings. Participants will discuss how to prevent and deter school safety threats as well as how the response to a crisis would be coordinated.

The roundtable will open with brief remarks from Nelson and introductions from participants. That portion of the agenda (from 11:30 a.m. to approximately noon) will be open to the press. The remainder of the session will be closed to the press to allow for a more candid conversation.
