ESC Region 12 Technology Foundation awards grant to Kendrick Elementary teacher
On September 24, the ESC Region 12 Technology Foundation virtually surprised Emily DeRosier, a kindergarten teacher from Kendrick Elementary, with a grant totaling $4758.88 for her proposal “iLearn by OSMOsis.” While the foundation typically surprises technology grant winners in person, pandemic restrictions forced this year’s announcement to be a virtual celebration. With the help of Kendrick Elementary staff and a fake Zoom “meeting,” the execution went off without a hitch! As foundation members waited anxiously on the Zoom call, a few of DeRosier’s coworkers entered her classroom with an iPad and an oversized presentation check. Cheers erupted from both the virtual call and students as foundation member, Alexis Newman, announced her award.
“You are among an elite group of award winners,” Newman said. “We received 43 applications, and yours is one of 8 outstanding proposals selected to receive grant funding. We are so proud of your efforts and all that you are doing every day for every student.”
Grants provided by the ESC Region 12 Technology Foundation encourage, facilitate, recognize and reward innovative and creative instructional approaches that use technology. When asked how she came up with her proposal, DeRosier said she was looking for a different tool to use with her kids that would be interactive and hands on. That is when she came across Osmo. Osmo allows teachers like DeRosier to target skill deficit areas and assign practice activities to build crucial phonological and math skills. Osmo will help teach sight words, letter and vowel patterns, shapes, and space relationships through interactive kid friendly technology applications.
DeRosier’s ultimate goal is to help students build foundational skills that will help them throughout their educational career. In fact, one of the best things about her proposal is that it is easily sustainable beyond the 2020-2021 school year. DeRosier is not only ensuring continued educational success for her current students but for many students to come!
Congratulations Ms. DeRosier and thank you to the ESC Region 12 Technology Foundation!
