• Young Children are Natural Scientists

Young children are natural scientists eager to discover all they can about the world around them. Technology, too, can expand students’ interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), as well as their ability to acquire information and solve problems - even in preK classrooms.

In Waco Independent School District (ISD), our prekindergarten program provides a learning environment that affords each child opportunities to use their natural curiosity to make sense of their world. Over the last two years, we’ve dramatically increased students’ time on task in STEM, while helping them get a jump-start on learning key concepts and skills.

Enrolling students in pre-k and kindergarten

High-quality prekindergarten inspires children to become lifelong learners and prepares them for kindergarten and beyond by teaching them important skills needed for academic and social success. Kids who attend high-quality prekindergarten are more prepared for kindergarten, have better reading and writing skills, do better in grades K-12, have better social skills, behavior, and conduct, and go on to greater success in life.

Waco ISD and other community partners launched a community-wide awareness campaign around a free parenting tool called Vroom.  Vroom provides daily, age-appropriate brain building activities for adults to do with infants, toddlers and preschoolers to help prepare each child for kindergarten.  Each brain building activity is paired with a science-based background, therefore allowing the adult to under stand how that specific activity is building the brain of the child.

Bringing awareness to our community through cross-sector partnerships is one great example of collective impact going on in Waco.  Community partners are reinforcing the same message about Vroom, utilizing the backbone organization for support, communicating to the families they work with about the free parenting tool, and tracking how many families and children they talk about Vroom with.

Early childhood providers, community organizations and community members can all help bring awareness to our community-click here:( to find out how!
