Waco High Assistant Principal
Felix Glass enjoyed a professional development trip
to Harvard University this summer.
High AP
Enjoys Trip to
Boston
by Felix
Glass
Wow, what a week!
First, some words of reassurance; so far as I know,
I still enunciate words correctly. For example, I
know the word is “chowder,” not “chowduh.”
Secondly, regardless of locale, the conclusion is
always the same. Providing
instructional leadership for teachers in an urban
public school is difficult. However, because it is
difficult, it can also be quite rewarding.
The goal of establishing theoretical frameworks that
can support the efforts of campus administrators was
on the forefront everyday at the institute. Beyond
this, it renewed for me a sense of mission and a
zeal for learning.
I know it is political rhetoric when policymakers
make the claim that what unites us is greater than
what divides us. But, in this instance, they are
right on target. Making determined efforts to
instill equitable opportunities for all students is
above reproach.
My experience at Harvard reminds me of a story about
Tom Landry. Landry, upon meeting a young man
introducing himself as “just a high school coach,”
chastised him. The legendary
Cowboys coach pointed out that getting teenagers to
commit to an activity that requires time, sacrifice,
and effort is much harder than
getting the same from paid athletes.
The staff at Harvard went out of its way to make me
feel like a respected campus administrator. I was
given the honor and privilege of dining with
colleagues in the Harvard Faculty Club.
Later in the week, I was treated to a bona
fide Northeastern “clam bake” complete with all the
lobster, steamed corn, and Boston Cream Pie I could
eat.
All of this was made
possible by the Raise Your Hand Texas
organization. I am forever indebted to them and
would be happy to visit with anyone interested in
knowing more about my trip and this organization.

Note: Felix Glass, assistant principal at Waco High
School, recently attended the Institute for
Urban
School Leaders at the
Harvard
Graduate
School
of Education. The professional development
opportunity provided Glass with training in
instructional leadership, inclusion, effectively
working with students from low socio-economic
backgrounds, and media relations.
