Services and Responsibilities

Health services, counseling services, Pregnancy, Education and Parenting (PEP), Title IX coordinator and secondary campus facilitator.

Health Services:

Waco ISD employs 30 health service staff members including ten registered nurses, ten licensed vocational nurses and ten health aides. These employees provide quality and preventative health care to all students. Health services staff provide basic first aid, track immunization requirements, dispense medication to students, conduct vision, hearing and spinal screenings and provide classroom instruction on diseases and hygiene. Hillcrest Medical Center and Family Practice Center contract with the district to serve students in two school-based health clinics located at Bell’s Hill elementary and South Waco Elementary. Students and community members receive both treatment and preventative care at these clinics.

Counseling Services:

WISD provides a comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program. The program is designed to make school a needs satisfying place for students and educators thus adding to the quality of life of all students and educators. The guidance program is deemed an integral part of the school curriculum for individual growth and personal development. Waco ISD employs 12 high school counselors, 1 alternative school counselor, 8 middle school counselors and 20 elementary counselors.

Pregnancy Education Program:

The mission of the Pregnancy, Education, and Parenting Program is to enable school-age parents, through education, to become self-sufficient responsible citizens. The program's goal is to reduce the number of students who drop out of school due to pregnancy and parenthood and to recover young parents to the educational system.

FITNESSGRAM Testing:

In compliance with Senate Bill 530, all students in grades 3-12 are required to take the FITNESSGRAM fitness assessment. The assessment is not based on good health, not athletic ability. The assessment includes measurements of aerobic capacity, strength, endurance, flexibility and body composition.

FITNESSGRAM serves as a guide for planning a personalized physical activity program. The test does not affect grades in any way. The information gathered during the administration of FITNESSGRAM will be sent to the Texas Education Agency, which will release a report to include district and campus results. Individual scores are kept confidential. However, scores will be made available to parents who file a written request.

Waco Independent School District believes that providing health-related fitness information will lead to a healthier lifestyle. A healthy student is better prepared to learn and perform in all aspects of life. Contact the physical education teacher on your campus or visit http://www.fitnessgram.net/texas for more information.
