Waco ISD Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez enjoyed reading to this group of Parkdale kindergarten students.

Hungry for reading

by Mary Senter

"In the light of the moon a little egg lay on a leaf," begins Eric Carle's, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The classic children’s book, which turned 40 this year, was read throughout Waco classrooms and across the country on October 8, 2009 in a coordinated effort to help get students engaged in reading.

Who doesn’t enjoy the imaginative story and colorful illustrations about a hungry caterpillar as he eats his way through a variety of foods, and the pages of the book as well?
The annual event, Read for the Record, which is sponsored by Jumpstart and Pearson Foundation, encourages teens and adults from across the country to read with young children.

This year, the official book of Jumpstart’s Read for the Record campaign was The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle.

By encouraging a single, common day of reading engagement where participants read the same book, Jumpstart hopes to set a new world record and raise awareness about the number of children entering kindergarten unprepared.

In this, the eighth year for the national "Read for the Record" initiative, Baylor University teamed up with Waco ISD schools to provide celebrity readers in classrooms across the district.
