G. W. Carver Academy desires to produce critically thinking, highly motivated, creative students who are prepared through an integrated curriculum to meet the challenge of living in a changing world. The unique curriculum inspires students to embark on adventurous odysseys and experience education through real world simulations. The only question is...

G. W. Carver Academy offers a unique focus of special programs for students. Each nine weeks, students travel through units called odysseys, or intellectual quests. During these adventures, students study real world, hands-on applications that set the stage for successful lifelong learning. In 2004, G.W. Carver Academy entered into a partnership with NASA to become an Explorer School. This special distinction, affored to only 100 schools in the United States, allows students and teachers access to curriculum and resources created by astronauts and scientists at NASA.

As a technology magnet school, students experience the integration of teachnology into every Odyssey through:

  • Internet research
  • digital photography and video
  • multimedia presentations
  • computer-based product design
With a full-size computer lab for each grade level, computers in every classroom, palm pilots, LEGO robotics, and distance learning technologies, G.W. Carver is on the leading edge of technology.

Eight graders travel every year on their last field trip to Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The spend day one on the beach, exploring the ocean elements and enjoying themselves a little bit. After staying overnight in hotels, our students spend the entire next day exploring and touring Johnson Space Center. Field trips like this and many others are an essential part of the experiental education at G.W. Carver Academy because they provide authentic learning experiences.

Sixth-graders combine math, science, language arts, and social studies skills while designing and constructing model bridges. After students complete their bridges, a friendly competition is held to see which bridge is the strongest. During on odyssey, students complete assignments, conduct simulations, and develop presentations while simultaneously learning skills and objectives in the core content areas. Engaging learners in all four content areas, while nurturing and building team skills in a family-like atmosphere, is the goal of G.W. Carver Academy.

An innovative robotics lab at Carver allows students to design and assemble robots using LEGO pieces and the latest LEGO software. Students use LEGOs to build tanks, cars, Ferris wheels or whatever their imagination allows. The students computers and infared laser technology to program their robots to perform multiple tasks. Events every year include the Robotic Olympics and Robotic Circus. In the spring, Carver hosts their annual after-school robotic competition.

Eigth graders explore the real world by conducting a job search for their dream job. To complete the simulaton, they

  • compile a resume
  • create a cover letter
  • apply for a job of their choice
  • have a live interview with members of the community
This real life exposure gives students a glimpse of reality, while equipping them with essential life and job skills.
