Regional band competition puts University High in the spotlight

The beautiful new University High was the venue for the 2012 UIL Region 8 Solo
and Ensemble band contest held in Waco this past weekend. And while the
Trojans were proud to show off their new campus, the school's very own
band gave the school something else to be proud of.
The University High Band competed at the solo and ensemble contest with 53 students participating. Of those students, 13 earned a "superior" rating while 25 earned "excellent" ratings. In addition, six students who also earned first-division ratings will advance to the UIL Texas State Solo and Ensemble Competition in May.
"I am very proud to say that our UIL Region
8 Executive Secretary told both Troy Tinney and me that our kids here at University
High were top notch and did a fantastic job as hosts, monitors, runners, and
concession workers," said University High Band Director Archie Hatten.
"Their performance as hosts not only made University High look good
but Waco ISD as well," he added.
Hatten said that many band directors from the 20 high schools represented went
out of their way to let him know how smooth the contest was run and how much
they enjoyed their experience this year at the UIL Solo and Ensemble contest.
Hatten expressed his appreciation for University High Principal Nolan Correa,
Fine Arts Director Troy Tinney and other administrators who were present during
the competition and helped by serving as judges and supplying meals for all
the workers.
"Mr. Correa made sure we had everything we needed in order to make this competition
successful," Hatten said. "I am so proud to have an administrator who cares
so much about the arts and its importance to our school and our students."
