UHS to host area Student Councils
Posted on 02/20/2012
The University High Student Council will host the District 6 spring convention on Wednesday, February 22, 2012, beginning at 9 a.m. in the school’s auditorium. Over 500 students and sponsors from approximately 120 schools in the Central Texas area will attend the convention in Waco.
In the past four years, the University High Student Council has grown from a struggling organization to a thriving membership at the local level. At the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year, the University High Student Council had just six students involved. The group now has over 60 members and students joining all the time. In addition, these students have earned top honors among their peers in other districts in the state.
The group has taken an active role in the statewide student council, serving as “president” of District 6 during the 2009-2010 school year. As “president,” the school housed the district flag on the campus and represented Central Texas at other conventions and events. In addition, the school has ben in charge of the District 6 executive committee and was asked to serve on the credentials committee at the state convention in March 2009.
The state of Texas has 19 districts, which means University High Student Council is one of the top 19 councils in the state. Tammy Smathers, an English teacher at University High, is the student council sponsor.
