Atkins presents Medal of Honor to UHS Cadet Lopez

On April 22nd of this year, Cadet Ismael Lopez, along with UHS JROTC Battalion Commander Cadet Lt. Colonel Alexandria Monroy and other cadets, were working the Michael Johnson Invitational Track and Field competition at Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium at Baylor University.

Cadets Lopez and Monroy were working the hammer throw event when Monroy received a text from another cadet informing her that she had to leave the event. As she was looking down to read the text, an athlete had just released the hammer and it was headed straight toward where Cadets Lopez and Monroy were standing.

Officials from the hammer throw yelled out to get out of the way of the throw. Risking his own safety, Cadet Lopez quickly pulled Monroy out of harm’s way, preventing serious bodily injury or possibly death.

Since the incident, Cadet Lopez has received some much-deserved recognition from local individuals and groups. The Heart of Texas Military Officers Association of America and The Good Soldier Foundation presented Cadet Lopez with the Spirit of America Award and Charles “Doc” Anderson, Texas State Representative for District 56, presented Cadet Lopez with a resolution honoring him for his courage and composure, both hallmarks of a true leader it states.

UHS JROTC Senior Army Instructor First Sergeant Leonard Montelongo, nominated Cadet Lopez for the JROTC Medal for Heroism, the HIGHEST honor a member of the JROTC program can earn.

Recently, on 15 August 2017, Cadet Ismael Lopez was presented the Medal of Heroism award, by Mr. Pat Akins, the Waco ISD President of the Board, for his actions on 22 April 2017.

As First Sgt. Montelongo stated, Cadet Lopez’s actions reflect great credit upon himself, his family, and the Trojan Battalion. He has exhibited true bravery and leadership.

Cadet Lopez, congratulations on receiving the highest honor for a JROTC cadet. Waco ISD is incredibly proud of the example you set.
