Waco ISD  through University High School is working on a project based learning assignment called Project SOAR.  We are incorporating STEM activities centered on the theme of "Destination Mars".  The students will work for two weeks on developing solutions to problems associated with space exploration to Mars. Current projects include building a go-cart for travelling on Martian terrain and MoDRN green chemistry, a molecular research network collaborative between Baylor, George Washington University, The University of Washington and Yale. Some of the  investigations are specifically aimed at the careful selection of taking safe products into outer space. In addition to those projects we are also investigating the introduction of foreign objects and species into an ecosystem as well as identifying and classifying various organisms.  Students will also have the opportunity to fly a Karma GoPro Drone as well as participate in a pilot program to test a new science based video game that Baylor is Beta Testing. The program has 4 instructors:Bill Taverner is the Technology specialist, Kari Emblem is the math specialist, Stephanie Bailey is the science specialist and Jeff Cunningham is the engineering specialist. A special thanks to  UHS Dean of Academies  Kandace Beckham and Donna McKethan, Waco ISD CTE Director, for supporting the program.
