Waco ISD partners with Mexican Institute on computer classes

Through a partnership with the Mexican Institute of the University of Houston, Waco ISD will offer Basic Computer Skills classes to Waco ISD Spanish speaking parents. The classes will be taught entirely in Spanish, hoping to build literacy skills through the use of computers.
The class will enable parents to help their children with school work, learn how to access their children's grades online, and learn skills that will help them secure employment.
In addition, parents will learn to use the computer and gain a better understanding of basic computer skills, knowledge in surfing the Internet, email, and the use of software programs like Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel, among other things.
"We felt that this might be something that our community could benefit from," said Dr. Alma Betty de Torres y Sandoval, Waco ISD Director of Bilingual Education/ESL Programs.
Since the instruction is offered in Spanish, participants will build their literacy skills while at the same time, they will be learning commands in English.
"The communication between the campuses and the parents is often strengthened when the understanding of languages is built…something we want to work on," Sandoval said.
The benefit, said Sandoval, is that through the use of computers, parents who do not speak English will gain a better understanding of what their student is accomplishing at school. It is also important for parents to feel confident and at ease when requesting help from a teacher or asking the school for assistance, Sandoval said.
The Basic Computer Skills Class, offered through the Mexican Institute of the University of Houston, is a free course that will provide 100 hours of instruction. Students will be required to pay $40 for materials. Upon completion, each student will receive a diploma from the Mexican Institute of the University of Houston. The class, which is taught entirely in Spanish, does not require any prior computer skills. While the class is offered for parents of Waco ISD students, children are not allowed in the class.
