Former Waco High and now NFL star Derrick Johnson was in town Wednesday, July 13 to talk about the upcoming
Kickoff Classic with his name on it that signals the start of high school football in Central Texas.
One of the best players ever to come out of Waco, Johnson just signed a new 3-year $21 million dollar free agent
contract to stay with the Kansas City Chiefs, and will be starting his 12th year with that team next month.
It's also his fifth year to sponsor the opening weekend of high school football at Waco ISD Stadium.
Here's the schedule:
Thursday, Aug. 25 @7:30 p.m.
Marlin vs Blooming Grove
Friday, Aug. 26 @7:30 p.m.
Waco HS vs San Antonio Roosevelt
Saturday, Aug. 27 @7:00 p.m.
University HS vs LBJ
Season tickets for Waco and University High Schools go on sale August 1.
Here's my conversation with Derrick Johnson about the Kickoff Classic, his NFL career, and the one game
he remembers most with the Lions. (Thanks to KXXV, the media sponsor for the weekend!)
