A special garden is not the only colorful surprise Cedar Ridge Elementary students will see when they return to school in August.

Texas Master Gardeners ramped up principal Helen Smith's simple request for a new gate and created a spectacular Crayon fence.

Sandy Katz came up with the idea and challenged her husband, Charlie, to broaden the scope of the project. Lowe's contributed a significant grant to pay for materials and Katz enlisted the help of some Master Gardener friends.  They picked seven primary Crayon colors and then created the unique splash of colors only Cedar Ridge has to create the brightest fence in town.

Members of that club had already been using a vegetable garden to educate students on how they can grow their own food, or how a tiny seed can sprout into a 10-foot tall sunflower.  They've also been surprised to see kids sneak an extra bite of fresh broccoli!
