Home, sweet home! That's what the Waco High Lions cross country team is saying today after finishing at the top of the Boys 5A/6A Varsity Division of the Waco Lions Cross Country Invitational. Schools from throughout the Interstate 35 corridor and beyond traveled to the Heart of Texas Soccer Complex to run the course on a beautiful and warm first day of Autumn.
Waco High won the meet by having five of the top 19 finishers. Antonio Danel led the way for the Lions by being the sixth runner to cross the finish line followed by David Villegas (11th), Chris Salinas (14th), Alex Salas (18th) and Louie Martinez (19th). Danel finished the three-mile race in 17:31.0.
University High School also had a good meet with a third-place team finish. The Trojans' Frankie Olivarez ran an outstanding race with a time of 17:21.9 followed closely by teammate Jerimiah Olvera who finished in eighth-place with a time of 17:46.0.
In the Girls' 5A/6A Varsity Division, Waco High and University finished sixth-place and seventh-place, respectively. Lady Lion Melissa Gonzalez, one of the top high school distance runners in the state, finished in eighth-place with a time of 20:33.1.
Teams competing in this year's invitational included Waco Live Oak, Round Rock McNeil, Elgin, Copperas Cove, Killeen Shoemaker, Waco, University, Temple, Corsicana, Round Rock Westwood, Lampasas, Gatesville, Bruceville-Eddy, Robinson, Axtell, Lorena, Reicher and Bosqueville.
