Trojans, Lions to meet at Hall of Fame game

The Waco Independent School District Athletic Department will host the Athletic Hall of Fame Game on Friday, November 7 at 7:30 p.m. when the Waco High Lions meet the University High Trojans on the gridiron for a friendly cross-town rivalry.

Former WISD players to be inducted

The football game, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will also serve as the induction ceremony for the 2014 Waco ISD Athletic Hall of Fame. This year, four former Waco ISD athletes will be inducted into the WISD Athletic Hall of Fame, joining a growing list of prestigious athletes.

The four newest members to be inducted into the WISD’s Athletic Hall of Fame include Shawn Medlock Trochim, Lin Elliott, Wayne Walker, and Joy Williams-Purnell.

Shawn Medlock Trochim, a 1988 graduate of Waco High School, starred on the Lady Lion basketball team for two years, rising to the top of the nation’s recruiting lists.  After playing basketball at McLennan Community College for two years, she signed with Texas A&M University, where she played for two seasons under Coach Lynn Hickey and remained a third year as a student coach for Texas A&M University.

Lin Elliott is a 1987 graduate of Waco High School where he starred on the gridiron as a placekicker.  At Texas Tech University he evolved into one of the outstanding placekickers in the nation, and ultimately earned the placekicker position for the Dallas Cowboys. In his second year with the Cowboys, Lin played an important role in helping his team earn a Super Bowl appearance, and win the ring in Super Bowl XXVII.

Wayne Walker, a 1985 graduate of Jefferson-Moore High School, led the football team to three straight playoff appearances as a running back and wide receiver. His talent led him to Texas Tech University where he excelled on special teams and as a wide receiver under Coach Spike Dykes. He ultimately became a free agent with the San Diego Chargers of the NFL, playing for three years before joining the Ottawa Rough Riders in the Canadian Football League.  Wayne retired in 2000 with the Arena League Tampa Bay Storm.

Joy Williams-Purnell is a 1979 graduate of Richfield High and an all-star member of the Richfield Ramblers basketball team. She was a four-year starter for the Lady Longhorn basketball team where she played under the guidance of National Hall of Fame Coach Jody Conradt.  The Lady Longhorns never lost a Southwest Conference game during her time at the University of Texas.  Joy currently holds records in blocked shots and rebounds, and is a member of the 1,000-point club.

The Waco ISD Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on the field during halftime of the Waco High vs. University High football game.

"Fastest Fifth-Grader"

In addition to the induction, there will be a third-quarter 50-yard sprint race for 15 fifth-grade students, each representing a Waco ISD elementary school. The purpose of the race, “Fastest Fifth-Grader,” is to promote school and team spirit in the elementary schools. The winning fifth-grader will earn a pizza and cupcake party for his or her entire grade.

Middle School Band Performance

The Middle School Bands will make a combined performance prior to the start of the game.  The ten-minute performance will begin at 7 p.m.

Honoring our Veterans

Since Veterans Day is on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014, Waco ISD will use the opening ceremony of the 2014 Hall of Fame Game to honor the men and women of all branches of the military whose sacrifices have kept our country free, and whose loyal service to this great country is deeply appreciated. The tribute to Veterans will begin at 7:10 p.m.
