Free income tax service at University High School has reached a milestone. Beginning January 23, 2014, the Ron E. Smith Academy of Business and Finance will begin its tenth year serving the Central Texas community with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. The finance academy is one of the curriculum offerings of the A.J. Moore Academies at University High School.
During the past nine years, academy students have prepared more than 12,800 electronic tax returns securing citizens more than $19-million in refunds. The service has been recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as the largest student run VITA Program in the country.
Tax service this year will once again be offered at University High School located at 3201 S. New Road. The site will be open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5 p.m. - 8 p.m., from January 23 to April 15.
In addition to filing income tax documents, students will also assist parents with the online FAFSA form, the federal documentation necessary for college financial aid.
