Dear Waco ISD Community,
Today our hearts go out to our neighbors in West who are experiencing a horrific tragedy following yesterday's fertilizer plant explosion. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones, homes and businesses, as well as the dozens who are being treated in area hospitals. We are also exceedingly thankful for the wonderful team of first responders and rescue squads who have been on the scene since the devastation occurred.
Waco ISD has approximately 40 employees who commute to work from West each day. These dedicated workers include teachers, maintenance staff and administrative personnel. In the coming days and weeks, Waco ISD will be reaching out to assist them as well as their friends and neighbors in West. We will also be offering aid to West ISD in whichever ways possible. Many of our schools and student organizations are already exploring ways to help.
Tonight, our University High boys soccer team plays in the state tournament for the first time ever. Excited though they are, these community service-minded athletes are also focusing on ways to help their neighbors to the north. Many of us will be in Georgetown tonight to support our Trojans, but like them, our thoughts will not stray from the care and concern we have for the citizens of West.
