  • Approved 2007-2008 budget amendments:
    • General fund will increase by $63,000 from sale of real property to student transportation due to the sale of a school bus.
    • General fund will increase by $398.66 from sale of real property to maintenance due to the rental of the cafeteria at Waco High.
    • University High will reallocate $6,138.53 from instruction to staff development, school leadership and extracurricular.
    • Brazos Middle will reallocate $560.48 from instruction to school leadership and maintenance.
    • General fund will reallocate $1,000 from instruction to debt service.
    • Kendrick Elementary will reallocate $6,000 from instruction to maintenance.
    • Viking Hills Elementary will reallocate $3,000 from instruction to library services.
    • Brook Avenue will reallocate $151 from instruction to staff development.
    • Athletics will reallocate $300 from extracurricular to maintenance.
    • A.J. Moore Academy will reallocate $1,000 from instruction to school leadership.
    • Doris Miller Elementary will reallocate $1,000 from instruction to social work.
    • South Waco Elementary will reallocate $2,200 from instruction to maintenance.
    • Athletics will reallocate $12,500 from extracurricular and maintenance to security.
    • University High will reallocate $1,188 from instruction to school leadership.
    • General fund will reallocate $5,400 from instruction to extracurricular.
    • Student Services will reallocate $1,162.22 from staff development to school leadership.
  • Approved the recommendation to order textbooks chosen by the 2007-2008 textbook committee.
  • Approved bid award for kindergarten caps, gowns and tassels to Graduate Affairs through March 27, 2009.
  • Approved job order contract renewal for roof repair services to Parsons Commercial Roofing as primary vendor and Johnson Roofing, Inc. as secondary vendor through March 27, 2009.
  • Approved amendment to Sodexo School Services contract to extend the contract for one year.
  • Approved the renewal of the interlocal agreement with the McLennan County Juvenile Probation Department for Child Nutrition Services.
  • Approved the renewal of the interlocal agreement with the Rio Brazos Co-operative for Child Nutrition Services.
  • Approved extension of note and lien regarding sale of old Waco High building.
  • Accepted gifts to Waco ISD:
    • Advanced Academics received $30,000 from the Waco Business League for establishing the International Baccalaureate Organization Primary Years Programme.
  • Approved district awards for Teacher Excellence Grant proposal.
  • Approved contract recommendations for employees whose contracts are governed by Chapter 21 of the Texas Education Code.
  • Approved contract recommendations for employees whose contracts are not governed by Chapter 21 of the Texas Education Code.
  • Approved the meal price increases of $0.25 for student and adult lunch prices for the 2008-2009 school year.



Monthly Financial Report: As of February 29, 2008, the financial report showed $68,198,081 in revenue and $57,978,252 in expenditures with expenditures exceeding revenue by $10,219,829.

Superintendent's Report: Dr. Roland Hernandez, superintendent of schools, thanked the audience for their presence at the board meeting. He reminded the audience of the many baseball and softball games. There is a middle school invitational track meet at Paul Tyson Field and the Waco Invitational Nat Haynes at Paul Tyson Field. He acknowledge the many students who will be representing Waco ISD at the state history and science fairs. He wished Trustee Debbie Luce, who was absent from the meeting due to illness, a speedy recovery.

Pledge of Allegiance
Kendrick Elementary fifth-grade students
Katherin Carnero, Aaron Dimas, Natalie Gutierrez, and Zachary Hartsgrove led the pledge of allegiance. Julie Sapaugh is the principal.

Keep Waco Beautiful Award
Kay Metz, director of development and community partnerships, introduced Sheri Street, executive director of Keep Waco Beautiful. Ms. Street recognized G.L. Wiley Middle as the "Campus of the Month" in appreciation of their environmental and beautification efforts. Principal Kermit Ward accepted the award.


State Partnership Awards
Sarah Collins, partnership specialist, recognized three partnerships that received awards at the state partnership convention in February. Lisa Saxenian, Waco High and McLennan Community College received a state award for the outstanding college partnership in Texas. South Waco Elementary received two awards: a school-wide award and an individual award. Aiyana Henry received the Texas state top partnership liaison award. The school received an award with HEB #3 for their outstanding partnership.
Dr. Ruth Harvin is the principal of South Waco Elementary.

TSPRA State Awards
Kay Metz
recognized Traci Marlin and the Waco ISD Development and Community Partnerships office for success at the Texas School Public Relations Association (TSPRA). Mrs. Marlin won six silver star awards and four gold star awards. Of her four gold star awards, two earned "best of category" awards. She received "best of category" awards for her re-design of the Adopt-a-School logo and for her original artwork within the Waco ISD Education Foundation's annual report.

Dale Caffey, public information officer, recognized Jesse Botello and Mary Senter for their awards at the TSPRA convention.
The public information office received seven gold star awards; two of those awards won "best of category" awards. The entries were as follows: The WISD newsletter produced by Mary Senter received a "best of category" in the newsletter division; "A mother's legacy," written by Mary Senter, received a "best of category" in the writing division; a district advertisement entitled "Revealing excellence in every child" produced by Mary Senter received a gold star; "The math wizard," a photograph by Mary Senter, received a gold star; a WISD-TV production by Jesse Botello of the WISD Coco-Cola Education Golf Tournament received a gold star; WISD-TV coverage of WISD football produced by Jesse Botello received a gold star; and "Targeting Tomorrow," a Career and Technology Education television show produced by Jesse Botello received a gold star.

Mr. Caffey congratulated all of the recipients for earning statewide awards, including Mrs. Collins, Mrs. Marlin, Mr. Botello and Ms. Senter.
